my administrative assistant for the past 18 years, who continues to smile while seamlessly doing much of the heavy lifting to support our team. My DBT team at Cognitive and Behavioral Consultants, LLP (CBC), has helped me grow as a DBT team leader, individual therapist, and skills trainer. Lata McGinn, my cofounder, has continued to be a great support to me over the past 24 years and to our DBT treatment and training program. At CBC, I continue to learn from and feel supported by many exceptional DBT clinicians, including Sara Steinberg, Jennifer Steinberg, Michelle Greenberg, Colleen Lang, Courtney Berry, Johanna Wekar, Amanda Edwards, Suzanne Davino, Yeraz Meschian, Liz Courtney-Seidler, Karen Burns, Irene Zilber, Arva Bensaheb, and Chad Brice.
Dena Klein and Becky Hashim, two former students and now talented therapist colleagues with whom I have had the pleasure of working both at Montefiore Medical Center and CBC, continue to provide ongoing encouragement and creative thinking as it applies to DBT for specialized populations. Many clients and their families in the Bronx and Westchester County, New York, have enhanced my skills as a DBT therapist and skills trainer. This book and my career would not have been possible without this group of remarkable people. Every day they teach me more about humility, compassion, curiosity, flexibility, commonalities, resilience, dialetics, the power of behavioral principles and validation, and the ultimate wisdom that comes from decades of experience. I am forever grateful to my wife and children for their love, support, and patience during the writing of this book. They helped me become a better husband, father, and skills trainer, in fact, by providing me with opportunities to practice my DBT skills in daily life. Every life hiccup and hardship provides me with a new teaching example and an opportunity to practice DBT skills. Finally, I want to thank Jill Rathus, my dear friend, cotreatment developer, coauthor, and former co- intern; together we have spent thousands of hours developing and challenging one another’s thinking about how to adapt and improve DBT for adolescents and families. Thank
